A Love Song

‘As Time Passes I Often Think Of You’ Article By Peter Barnes.

People have asked me to write a love song over the years but I didn’t think I could.

Anyway, I finally sat down and wrote one. Knowing nearly every song title and words have been written about love, I decided I would just write what came to me.

I think one of the strongest emotions we can have is first love, or lost love, or the passing of a much loved partner.

Amazingly, it only took two hours to write the words. If I had tried to research for a love song, it would have probably taken a long time.

I think one of the greatest love songs is Savage Garden’s song ‘I Knew I Loved You’. If I could pick just one song and say I wish I had done that it would be that song.

When writing any song, once finished, sometimes you wished you could have done better. Even the Beatles felt like that about some of their songs.

Interestingly, Paul McCartney wrote some songs from life experience. One of John Lennon’s favourite McCartney songs was ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, which was about McCartney’s then girlfriend in the 1960s, Jane Asher. The very beautiful Jane Asher served as a primary muse for McCartney from 1963 to 1968, during their five-year relationship.

So writing love songs about life experience is the way to go.

Many love songs are played at funerals. Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ (the love theme from the 1997 film Titanic), is frequently played at funerals and is a profoundly moving tribute.

Love songs would come under the popular segment of the music market and that is extremely competitive.

Anyway, the love song of mine is titled ‘As Time Passes I Often Think Of You’. I have included the lyrics below.

‘As Time Passes I Often Think Of You’

As time passes
I often think of you

The first time we met
The first time we kissed
The first time my heart raced
Just thinking of you

As time passes
I often think of you

The first time you took my hand
And said you loved me
The memory of that moment
Stays in my heart

It all seems like a dream now
Like waking in the morning
Thinking how wonderful life is
With you in it

As time passes
I often think of you

Your beautiful smile
Your way of making life brighter
Everything about you
Was magic

You said we could reach for the stars
I was just happy
To have you in my arms

As time passes
I often think of you

The first time you took my hand
And said you loved me
