‘We Will Never See You Again – Sad War Song’ Article By Peter Barnes.
‘We Will Never See You Again’, is a sad war song focusing mainly on loved ones who lost a family member in war.
In 2015, I created a video titled ‘You Never Came Home’ with many of the words (lyrics) that you will hear on the song.
I had to change the title to ‘We Will Never See You Again’, because there was already a song with the title ‘You Never Came Home’.
Over the years, I have read many stories of the incredible grief of families who lost love ones in war, and thus the creation of this song,
My Great Grandmother’s brother was killed in the Battle Of Fromelles in 1916. He was married with four children. In reading the correspondence between his wife and Army headquarters in her trying to find out what happened to her husband is heart-rending. His remains were never found.
Today, many women serve in the military right around the world and it was important to include a woman also singing in the song and it also reflects that women suffer great loss in war, like mothers, wives, sisters, and girlfriends, for instance. This is the first song I have created that would have meaning world-wide.
You were our nation’s best
The crowd waved and cheered
As you marched away
To a place no-one could imagine
We got the news that you were lost
And we lived in hope for a while
We just wanted you to come home
The door to open and see you there
We thought we heard you near
But it was just the wind in the trees
As time passed
We knew
We will never see you again
We will never see you smile
Or hear your voice again
Your name is remembered
Your sacrifice honoured
We just wanted you to come home
To live
To love
And to be loved
As time passed
We knew
We will never see you again
